Hypnotherapy for IBS and Digestive Issues

The Gut That Listens to Everything

Your digestive system has its own nervous system. Around 500 million neurons line the gut, forming what researchers sometimes call the second brain. This enteric nervous system is in constant two-way communication with the brain which means that what is happening emotionally and psychologically is always being registered in the gut. And what is happening in the gut is always influencing mood, thought, and nervous system state.

This is not metaphor It is physiology.

When the nervous system is under sustained stress, the gut is one of the first places it registers. Digestion slows or accelerates. The gut microbiome shifts. Inflammation can increase. The sensitivity of the gut lining changes. What we call IBS, irritable bowel syndrome is in many cases the digestive system doing exactly what an overwhelmed nervous system tells it to do.

What the Research Shows

Gut-directed hypnotherapy has a significant and growing body of research behind it. Studies at Manchester University, conducted over decades, demonstrated that hypnotherapy produced substantial improvement in IBS symptoms in the majority of participants, with effects that were maintained over time. This is not alternative to medical care it is a well-evidenced complement to it.

What gut-directed hypnotherapy does is work directly with the nervous system's relationship to the gut calming the hypersensitivity, reducing the alarm response, and allowing the digestive system to function with less interference from an overstimulated threat response.

What Sessions Involve

This work combines direct hypnotherapeutic work with the gut -- using imagery, suggestion, and nervous system regulation -- with the kind of deeper inquiry that asks what the symptoms may be holding or expressing. In my practice, this is always sacred work, not a clinical procedure. The body is always communicating something. Symptoms are not enemies.

Sometimes the gut has been carrying anxiety, grief, or unexpressed experience for a very long time. As that begins to be met, the gut begins to settle. I have helped many change their experience of IBS and eating using Hypnotherapy and various other approaches.
