FAITH AND DOUBT

FAITH AND DOUBT
A Sacred Alchemy Perspective

Faith and doubt are yin and yang…… the ancient teaching that all things exist in dynamic relationship with their opposite, that neither pole is complete without the other, that the art of a conscious life is not the elimination of tension but the capacity to rest within it.

Wisdom does not live at either extreme. It lives in the middle place, that fertile and uncomfortable territory where faith and doubt meet and circle each other, where certainty dissolves into question and question opens into something larger than either answer or ignorance. We cannot see these forces moving in us, but they are always there…… shaping how we step forward, how we hold back, how we love, how we risk, how we pray.

The spiritual life is not a life without tension. It is a life that has learned to work with tension as its primary material. When we understand the crossing points between faith and doubt as invitations rather than problems, something shifts…… we stop trying to resolve what was never meant to be resolved, and we begin instead to inhabit the full range of what we are. Those who cannot make that crossing tend to get stuck…… frustrated, anxious, cycling between a faith that feels brittle and a doubt that feels like drowning.

Moving beyond binary thinking is not a comfortable invitation. It asks us to hold more than one truth at once, to resist the relief of simple answers, to stay curious about the other…… the person whose faith looks nothing like ours, the person whose doubt has taken them somewhere we have never been.

Consider how faith actually distributes itself in a human life. Some people carry enormous faith in the world, in others, in the goodness of things…… and yet have almost none in themselves. They will believe in everyone except the one looking back at them in the mirror. Others are the reverse…… self-reliant to the point of isolation, trusting their own resources absolutely while remaining closed to anything that asks them to depend on something beyond their own control. Neither of these is wholeness. Both are a kind of poverty.

Doubt is a complicated companion. At its best it is a true ally, the one that keeps us honest, that refuses to let us drift into the comfortable sleep of unexamined belief. At its worst it is a killjoy of the first order, prepared to undermine any possibility of joy or expansion if that is what it takes to maintain the illusion of safety. Doubt working in the shadows of a large ego is a particularly interesting creature…… it presents as mastery, as discernment, as superior understanding, while quietly ensuring that nothing new can ever truly arrive. Doubt often intensifies after the great blows of a life…… the losses and betrayals and collapses that leave a person fundamentally unsure whether the world can be trusted again. Some people carry that acute doubt for years. Some carry it for a lifetime.

So how do we hold the tension with any kind of balance? By learning to explore the tension itself as the teaching…… to become genuinely curious about what lives in the space between our certainties and our questions, between the places where we can surrender and the places where we cannot yet.

That exploration is the practice. That willingness to stay inside the difficulty without demanding that it resolve itself is, perhaps, what faith actually is.

WORKING WITH FAITH AND DOUBT IN SACRED ALCHEMY

In Sacred Alchemy practice, the tension between faith and doubt is not a problem to be solved but a threshold to be crossed. Drawing on Jungian depth psychology, Ericksonian hypnosis, shamanic tradition, and somatic process, this work offers a container in which the deeper questions of a spiritual life can be held and explored with genuine rigour and tenderness.

If you are navigating a spiritual crisis, a loss of faith, a period of profound uncertainty, or simply a sense that something in your inner life is ready to shift, Sacred Alchemy offers a way of working that meets you exactly where you are.

Alexia Elliott is a psychospiritual practitioner, hypnotherapist, and shamanic practitioner based in Leicester with over twenty years of experience in depth practice. She works with individuals and groups seeking meaningful, embodied transformation.

THE ALCHEMICAL HEART
A Six-Month Circle for the Deeper Work
In Person, Leicester. Starting 12 September 2026.

If something in this article has landed in you, if you recognise yourself somewhere in the territory between faith and doubt and you sense that recognition is pointing toward something…… this circle is for you.

The Alchemical Heart is a six-month group journey. Six sessions, the same circle of people, building trust and depth over time. Each session draws on Sacred Alchemy, Ericksonian hypnosis, Jungian depth work, shamanic practice, and somatic process. The group itself becomes part of the medicine — who you are in relation to others, what the circle reveals, what only becomes visible when you keep showing up.

This is not a workshop series. It is a sustained container for genuine inner work, and the work compounds across the six months in ways that a single session or day event simply cannot reach.

Places are strictly limited to ensure the depth and intimacy the work requires.

Early bird investment: £1,000 with a £200 deposit before 31st July 2026.
After 31st July: £1,200.
The remaining balance can be paid in full or by payment plan.
